Best Beaches To Shoot At: Lover's Point

Lover’s Point, Pacific Grove, CA.

Good for proposals, families with kids of all ages, engagements, weddings.

Permit required.

Pacific Grove, CA. Before I go any further I must state that at Lover’s Point there will always be a seagull or there will always be a squirrel. Now that that’s out of the way, this lovely half park, half beach is a top choice for photo sessions.

Nestled between the Monterey Bay Aquarium and 17 Mile Drive, Lover’s Point is possibly Pacific Grove’s top attraction (although I’m sure some monarch butterflies will have something to say about that).

There is an abundance of free parking along Ocean View Blvd but not always near Lover’s Point. The earlier you arrive the better.

Unlike the other beaches on my list (Shark Fin Cove, Carmel Beach, Natural Bridges) Lover’s Point is the only one that is landscaped. There is a large lawn area with picnic tables that each come with their own barbecue so you can book a family shoot and then grill up a tri tip right after.

If you prefer to not make your own food, there are a couple of options nearby. There’s the Beach House restaurant and bar which overlooks the calm cove. This is more of an upscale spot with indoor and outdoor seating. It’s got 4.5 stars and a $$ rating on Google. There is also the Grill on Lover’s Point. This is more of a fast food burger stand and is cheaper than the Beach House but they have many options including ice cream.

There are several spots at Lover’s Point that make for great photo opportunities including two small beaches. The first is on the very shallow, usually calm cove. This area is very popular for families with young children and it’s just down the steps from The Grill.

You may also see groups of people entering the water here to go scuba diving or kayaking as you can rent from Pacific Grove Adventures. They are not open at the Lover’s Point location all the time so make sure to check their availability before you go.

The second beach can be accessed by a steep staircase and is more secluded. It faces East so the morning light hits it beautifully. If you’re lucky and can get there early on a weekday morning you may have it all to yourself!

I took the photo below in this location on a very nice October afternoon.

Above these beaches are where you can find the picnic tables and the big lawn. The lawn is great for photos too as it contrasts very well with the beach locations. Notice the color difference in the above and below images.

Another distinct feature of Lover’s Point is the large rocky outcrop that juts out into Monterey Bay. This is very fun to scramble up and gives you fantastic views of the entire bay. I recommend this spot for a wedding proposal.

This rocky outcrop is home to more ground squirrels than you’d like to count.

Lastly, because the city of Pacific Grove has done a great job with their coastal trail access, one can walk or even bike to and from Lover’s Point. You can easily get your family or engagement photos taken and then walk the 1 mile scenic trail to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and see the otters. Walking west will take you along the cliffs all the way out to Asilomar. Taking the coastal trail east from Lover’s Point will guide you into Monterey and right up to the aquarium’s front door.

If you are coming from a distance and want to book a hotel near Lover’s Point, there are two right across the street: Lover’s Point Inn and Borg’s Ocean Front Motel.

Overall, Lover’s Point is a great location for photo shoots. There are multiple locations that give plenty of different looks and you can make a whole day around it. I highly recommend it for families, proposals, engagements, and wedding photos. You will love it! I mean, it’s not called “Ho Hum Point” or “Meh Park”.
